Elopement

There’s something incredibly romantic about an elopement. Just the two of you. In your own little world. Vowing to spend the rest of your lives together. No fuss. No pressure. Just the two of you.

And in this ever changing wedding world, elopements are on the increase. Many couples are now opting for a low key registry wedding to ‘do the legal’ bit and then a full on after party, often involving far flung countries with sunnier climes or British, outdoor festival type settings where you’re ‘blessed’ by a celebrant.

What I love about this particular elopement, is not only the gorgeous photography {courtesy of Dasha Caffrey}, not only the incredibly chic bride {those shoes!!!} but how touching it is to witness a couple take their very personal and very private vows. Jacquie and Tony make such a lovely couple and I’m so proud to share their elopement with you all. Words by Jacquie.

We were married at Islington Town Hall, London. We were lucky enough to be planning two weddings – the legal ceremony in London and the big party is Tuscany, Italy so we wanted to keep the London ceremony as simple as possible. The town hall is just a few moments walk from our home (the first place we have lived together) and the area means a lot to us and has been the setting for many happy memories.

I found the shoes before I found the dress and from there on it was all about finding a dress that would display the shoes to their best advantage! I suspected I would be going for a cocktail length dress – as it was just the two of us (plus witnesses!) I was keen t keep things simple – but stylish!

We found Dasha {our photographer} after much time spent hunting online. Not usually people who are comfortable in front of a camera, we really wanted to find a photographer who would be unobtrusive, coax us into feeling comfortable and would allow us to enjoy our private moment whilst capturing it effortlessly. Dasha managed all of those things, and more – she was also one of our witnesses!

Knowing I’m not a big diamond fan, Tony fully consulted me on the design of my engagement ring, which was made by a friend of our on Hatton Garden. When the time came to choose wedding rings, we were only ever going back to the same place. Tony wanted something simple whereas I had a ring made to fit perfectly around my engagement ring.

Tony and I decided not to have anybody at the London ceremony besides the obligatory two witnesses. It gave us the opportunity to savour our wedding day and the ability to have a truly relaxed vibe and massive party in Italy as all the formal bits were out of the way.

We wanted to plan the day how we wanted and didn’t pay any attention to family wishes or societal norms. Of course the family were put out when we said we were eloping around the corner from home but they did eventually get over it. As it was such an informal ceremony and there were no guests, no reception etc it was important to keep the details basic – after all, we could (and did) go all out for the Italian wedding later on in the week.

My advice for the wedding day? Don’t sweat the small stuff.  As long as you show up, and he shows up, nothing else matters.

On marriage, tell them that you love them everyday, never go to sleep on an argument and insist on regular date nights! Just because you’re married doesn’t mean you have to be boring, why not pull out those stilettos and put on some lippie – you’ll like it as much as he does!

So as you can see ladies, Jacquie and Tony truly did it their way! What do you think? Are you planning an elopement followed by a big party? Would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Hi Guys, my sister and her husband (already legally married back home) want to have a London Elopement. Is there any (legal) rules to follow for that? I have no idea and i can’t find much on the internet.

If someone could give me some tips would be brilliant.

    Thanks.
